Chapter 1:

"Dammit!" Shikamaru slams his fist into his bedroom wall for the fifth time, the white sheetrock smeared with the blood from his chafed aching knuckles. Ever since he buried that damned murderer in his family's land, he hasn't gotten a minute of sleep. He's not really sure why, but for some unknown reason, the masochist plagues his mind. He thinks about him, he dreams about him, and he even swears he hears that sadistic baritone voice of his…and it's always saying the same thing…even in his dreams… "Free me,"… Shikamaru has had all he can take.

Everything that's happened just now is all a blur to him…
Suffocating darkness…
A bright light…
A shovel…
A needle and thread…
Confusion…
He tries to process all this as he lays there on the ground staring up at the scowling face of the one who'd done him in: Shikamaru Nara. Finally, feeling his attachment to his lungs and remembering how to speak, the manages to utter, "What the fuck..?"

As he stares down into amethyst eyes, he realizes what he'd just done. He uncovered and reassembled possibly the biggest threat to anyone with a soul. 'What the hell did I just do..?'

Hidan tries to move his limbs, but they won't budge. He can barely even breath. "Don't even try to move," he hears the monotonous voice of his killer say as he lights a cigarette and takes a puff, "Having been in pieces for so long, your muscles need time to fuse back together. Until then, you won't be able to lift a finger." Another puff. 'It's as if the kid is psychic…' They stare at each other for about 10 seconds before the Leaf nin rises from his crouching position and yawns, "Well, it's getting late. Time to get going." Hidan is about to argue about being left behind when he notices a stretcher by Shikamaru's feet. He grabs the zealot by the arms and drags his numb body onto the stretcher and begins dragging him away form the hole he once slept in. "Um, hey," Hidan mumbles, still having dirt in his trachea, "How long was I in there exactly?" Not breaking stride, Shikamaru replies boredily, "About a month. Why?" The masochist smirks, almost triumphantly, "…Kakuzu's dead, ain't he..?" The chunin nods. The rest of the trip goes by in silence.

'Thank God I live in the forest,' Shikamaru thinks sourly as he unlocks his back door and carefully maneuvers the stretcher up the stairs and into the guest bedroom where he practically dumps the limps masochist onto the bed. He still questions why he went through the trouble in the first place. Why couldn't he just forget about him and leave him in the past? He is ripped from his thoughts when he hears the Jashinist, "So, um, Shikamaru, was it? Who's house is this?" "Mine." "Really? You live alone?" "Why?" Shikamaru could feel his nerves wearing thin. 'The guy's only been here 2 minutes and already he's getting on my nerves. This is such a pain.' "I was just trying to make conversation," Hidan mumbles. Another minute of silence. Another yawn. It really was getting late. Shikamaru turns to leave and Hidan says, "Hey! Where are you going?!" "It's already getting dark out, and I'm going to try and get some sleep. I suggest you do the same." He then quickly turns around and leaves the room. There's no way he's telling the masochist about his recent insomniatic symptoms Hidan mumbles, "Oh," and Shikamaru retires to his own bed…slipping into the only sleep he's had in weeks.
